_Kingdom (キングダム, Kingudamu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yasuhisa Hara. It has been serialized in Shueisha‘s seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump since January 2006, with its chapters collected in sixty-five tankōbon volumes as of June 2022. Kingdom provides a fictionalized account of the Warring States period primarily through the experiences of the war orphan Xin and his comrades as he fights to become the greatest general under the heavens, and in doing so, unifying China for the first time in 500 years._
_During the Warring States period in China, Xin and Piao are two brother-like youngsters who dream of becoming Great Generals, despite their low status as orphaned slaves. One day, they encounter a man of nobility, who gives Piao an opportunity to undertake an important duty within the state of Qin’s royal palace. Parting ways, Xin and Piao promise each other to one day become the greatest generals in the world. However, after a fierce coup d’état occurs in the palace, Xin meets with a dying Piao, whose last words spur him into action and lead him to encounter the young and soon-to-be king of Qin, Zheng Ying._
_Although initially on bad terms, Xin and Zheng become comrades and start on a path filled with trials and bloodshed. Zheng’s objective is to bring all the warring states under Qin, and Xin seeks to climb to the very top of the army ranks. Against a backdrop of constant tactical battle between states and great political unrest, both outside and within the palace, the two endeavor towards their monumental ambitions that will change history forever._
_In 2013, Kingdom was awarded the 17th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Grand Prize. As of April 2017, the series has sold 30 million copies._
_On December 12, 2012 the series won a Guinness World Record for manga written by the most people. The record was made possible due to its “Social Kingdom” Campaign where artists, fans, and voice actors redrew the entire 26th volume. Each of them picked 1 frame and redrew it and the top 100 would be given a special edition of the manga. Eiichiro Oda (One Piece), Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto), Hirohiko Araki (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken) and many others were among the participants._
**Yasuhisa Hara**
_Yasuhisa Hara is a Japanese manga artist well known for his manga series Kingdom. His manga won the grand prize in the 17th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Bunkashō in 2013._
_In 2012, Kingdom was penned in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the manga drawn by the most people in recorded history (1087 in total). This was during the ‘Social Kingdom’ campaign celebrating the airing of the Kingdom anime in the same year. The likes of Eiichiro Oda, Hirohiko Araki, Takehiko Inoue, and Kishimoto Masashi were amongst the participants during the event._
_Kingdom has a grand live-action movie that released on April 19, 2019 with a nifty budget of 2 billion yen (~$18 million) according to comicbook.com. The movie covers the first five volumes of the original manga and is loyal to the scripts verified by Yasuhisa Hara, with TOHO aiming for it to gross 4 billion yen. The likes of Yamazaki Kento, Yoshizawa Ryo, Hashimoto Kanna, and Nagasawa Masami are amongst the lead cast of the movie, with Shinsuke Sato as the director._
_Amongst the most selling manga in the past decade, Hara Yasuhisa’s Kingdom remains the only one without any license from an English outlet. VIZ, who are largely loyal to Shueisha, have been reluctant to pick it up despite it being one of the most popular series in Japan._
