[Kanon 2006](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1530/Kanon_2006) v2 with improved encodes. Eclipse/a.f.k. subs, QC/edit/typeset by me. A lot of the staff members who helped make this show great died in the KyoAni fire, including Takemoto Yasuhiro, who directed and storyboarded some of my favorite episodes here. Rest in peace. [Video quality comparisons](https://slow.pics/c/7K1F0f9G) Please leave feedback in the comments, good or bad. Please read this short [playback guide](https://gist.github.com/motbob/754c24d5cd381334bb64b93581781a81) if you want to know how to make the video and subtitles of this release look better. All components of this release are released into the public domain to the [greatest extent possible](https://gist.github.com/motbob/9a85edadca33c7b8a3bb4de23396d510).

Thanks! Wondering why you used 2.0 audio instead of 5.1 audio?

I just assume that the 5.1 audio in TV anime isn't worth anything
Thanks, guess it depends on how they did it. If it's just a simple upmix, yeah not really worth it. If they actually had access to the original tracks, could be. Per this site they did hire people specifically to remaster in 5.1 (though the reviewer indicates it was. https://ultimatemegax.wordpress.com/2015/11/16/kanon-blu-ray-box-review/ I notice a pretty big difference in quality when swapping between the 5.1 FLAC I muxed in from Doki's vs the 2.0 Opus from this encode, especially in the music and in Yuuichi's voice. Some of that sounds like it's due to the opus track being bitrate starved (I think this is 128 kbps? That's a bit low. Really need to go up over 256 kbps to get rid of most audible artifacts), but some could be due to the 5.1 remaster.

Probably just due to amplification differences. But if you don't think that's true, feel free to post samples where you think there's a legit quality difference.
For where it's bitrate starved it's a bit hard to compare since the tracks have too many other differences. The voices seem to sound better in the highs on the flac track, but it could just be due to the amplification difference. That being said, doubling the bitrate would mean a 24 MB larger file size - not really much to worry about on 1.2 GB files. If you do choose to in the future, I personally would appreciate it as I download your releases a lot. For the 5.1 vs 2.0, there are several scenes where they added some spatial effects such as when Akiko shovels in the background in ep 1 at 7:25. It comes out of the side speaker in the 5.1 track, but in the 2.0 track even with PLIIx enabled, the effect isn't nearly as clear. The Op/Ed sound pretty cool too, they were mixed for 5.1. Anyway, thanks for your work on this! The video definitely looks better compared to prior releases.

Oh, well in that case, people with 5.1 sound systems might want to look for a different release.
If you don't have such a setup, it's really hard to judge whether it is necessary or not. Imo including 5.1 is always worth it if the channels aren't empty (which already happened, but isn't the case here). TV show or movie shouldn't really matter. Even when there is no personal need for you right now, who knows, maybe in the future there is. A seperate ".mka" file for 5.1 wouldn't hurt anyone, if file size is a reason against doing it. 128kbps should be okay-ish for opus, but it's pretty much the bare minimum for 2.0 audio. I personally would go with at least 160kbps for being safe or maybe even 192kbps (like others do nowadays). The difference in file size is really small compared to the difference some people might notice with really decent audio setup now or in the future. In the past I've used 96kbps/128kbps Opus which I definitly regret nowadays and actually noticed some audio differences (primarily music only tho). For 160kbps+ I've never noticed anything. However, that's years ago and maybe Opus got better with that.
motbob with his continued campaign against people with not-shit sound systems. One day he'll get one and regret all the wasted effort trying to purge 5.1 wherever he can.

I have a 5.1 setup in my living room. I don't use it. I prefer headphones.
