This is a remux of the 2023 US Blu-ray by Discotek. Included with this Blu-ray is a brand new English dub and newly translated/styled subtitles. After over a year of waiting it has finally been released.

Everything in this release is what's included on the disc. Anything not included was simply not on the disc, likely due to licensing restrictions. The Science Lessons and miscellaneous special features are included in their own folder. Also of note is that Episode 4 has a widescreen intro, and Episode 6 is entirely in widescreen. As a special feature the 4:3 open matte versions have been included on the disc as well and are present in the Open Matte folder. Episode 6 in particular has some unfinished animation near the top and bottom of some scenes that is normally cut off by the widescreen matte, which is why they are separate from the main episodes.

Given that this is a remux, absolutely no encoding was performed on the data present on the disc. The video is of course encoded on the disc in AVC H.264. As for the audio, both the original Japanese and English dub are in 2.0 stereo and encoded with DTS-HD Master audio, while the English dub has an additional 5.1 track. The bonus features use standard Dolby AC3. Included are two sets of subtitles in the Blu-ray format.

See you next time.
Quick question. Did you rip the video from the Blu-ray at 16:9 aspect ratio and 1920 x 1080p resolution instead of the proper 4:3 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1440p x 1080p?
This is a remux, meaning that the video is identical to how it's presented on the disc. (Minus some extra metadata and reshuffling of the audio/sub tracks). With the Blu-ray format, everything has to be 16:9 1920x1080p, so anything that doesn't match exactly has to be pillarboxed or letterboxed.
It is possible to remove the black bars but this requires encoding, which is also what you do to reduce file size or grain or do any sort of video editing. However this is beyond what I can and frankly want to do, I'm interested in preserving the quality so that's why you get a remux. Apologies if it looks odd on a proper 4:3 monitor.
@stebia it is the same footage as the JPBDs (which is a really good remaster). I imagine the compression is slightly different so if you did like a file comparison it would be different, but nothing a human would notice. The main hype with the Discotek blu-ray, besides there being an official blu-ray of Gunbuster in the US of course, is that they created a new dub and new subtitles.
