Well damn, I don't even like this series that much any longer to tout this release. Or tennis, at that.
Subs by
Acebuster (who in turn edited ILA's script) - hefty amount of superficial translation fixing and cps relieving edits for TV-1 eps 1-20
Bluefixer - all of the above + heavily edited for TV-1 21-26
JohnnyEnglishSubs - all of the above + fully reworked, every line edited for OVA-1 aka AWN2
Pachinko/Me - all of the above + effectively every line rewritten for OVA-2 aka Final stage
Raws are BD/DVD/DVD respectively from same folks credited above, except for TV-1 21-26 which are by Moozzi2, since LowPower-Raws torrent is dead and I A) don't have a better source than Moozzi2 B) don't have a U2 account C) can't be bothered. To be frank, I wouldn't have minded releasing it with hypothetical [Judas] crf=48.0 encode, it's just you vapoursynth nerds that'd whip my cheeks
Johnnyenglish's DVDRip for OVA-1 also looks like dogshit with interlacing all over the place, but it doesn't seem like anyone could be bothered to make a proper encode whereas if I make one myself, there's no telling if it won't be even more disastrous
Pachinko's Final Stage video is by far the closest one to perfection - I couldn't for the life of it make a better encode myself
TL;DR: I TLCed / reworked all 51 episodes of this series and compiled it in this release. Conveniently, this aligns the episodes in watching order, so enjoy.
There wasn't really much point in making this release, as everyone interested has probs already watched it with existing subs ~~though their quality level was "be grateful those exist"~~ So I'm late to the party and also nobody asked for it lmao. But I put a soul into those .ASS anyhow. Honorable kudos to Muzussawa for helping me tackle a bunch of doubtful lines.
Still here? Oh well. Now comes my boring rant about the process and diatribe against everything, long as I have no better outlet for this and can't help ripping that shtick off Darkonius.
So, in a way, an act of works carried out as follows:
I expected the TV1 to be least messed up, given how the majority of it was preemptively revised by Acebuster back in 2019. Yet the workflow was far from smooth as not a single episode spared me the wince of:
keyframe snapping with "Ends after threshold" = 2000 / "Every_other_threshold" = 0
Stuttering (duh) with timings not even including the stuttered word itself, only the "T-t-t-t—"
"-san / sama"
"Toudou / Ryuuzaki / Kyouko"
Toudou devolved to Toudo at some point and then straightened his back to Toudou again
Ditto for Nishi and Nish
Chairman "Ryuuzaki Genji"
Tennis association referred to as "league" and "union"
"Ochou" is shortened to both "Madame" and "Butterfly"
30-cps
Occasional Ryomasubs and French punctuation .
2007 fashion of handling overlapping lines by duplicating(duh)
Episode 1 uses both Japanese (Year 2 of high school) and western (11th grader) systems
But there should be a silver lining to this, right? So instead of a smooth sailing, I got the artsy-craftsy motion-captured signs that only make my life harder and are prone to exploding. Please don't try to redeem motion captured signs for me, because then I will throw a tantrum and delete this torrent altogether.
I also almost credited Acebuster with another fuckup on ED timings in ep1 until I realized it is the source fuckup: madhouse deadass mistimed the onscreen lyrics by good 3 seconds.
Aside from that, I only touched Acebuster's script here and there superficially - I don't care much for TV1 and people seemed to find it workable before so why bother
On the BlueFixer part... Well, just multiply Acebuster part by 3 to get the degree of bluefixing I had to do.
The sanguine part effectively ends here: up until now, fixing all the small shit was irritating, but at least amusing to take count of, especially combined with "Drinking With Acebuster" game when you take a shot of vodka for every stupid blunder. Had I carried this practice on into AWN2, I'd drink myself to death halfway into ep1. Besides, Acebuster sub was not half-bad, just underTLC'd and not to my taste. They still did a great job noone else would bother to😎
AWN 2 had been an entirely new translation, sometimes just JohnnyEnglish -> ConventionalEnglish, but in most cases a full JP->EN, as Johnny's version seldom provided more than barebones of a sentence, in turn being grasped correctly by Johnny only half the time. In this installment, the sheer "don't-give-a-fuck" attitude was apparent on every piece of lost in translation material: Japanese line says one thing, vostfr says second thing, JohnnyEnglish says the third, completely different thing.
You wouldn't expect much from official subs, even less so from regional ones, even less so from Johnnyenglish's ones, yet this OVA somehow experienced a higher than that level of fucked-upery. It feels like everyone working on it prior to me was incompetent, and now, with my release, this series received its 4th iteration of incompetence.
What about OVA2 Final Stage? Well, let's just say I never shut my shotgun drawer while remaking it. I was young and forgiving once.
Had regional subtitle-makers not been obsessed with hardsubs I'd also include foreign translations just to give this anthology more of that ULTIMATE_EDITION gloss, but A) I don't feel like getting anywhere near that cesspit B) This was not intended to be an ultimate edition anyhow
Overall, those 3 seasons were the bad, the abysmal and the atrocious, sub-wise. Wish I would have done it sooner, but alas, WoH blew his brains out already. Now, this new release is still far from perfect - it is effectively one man's work, so I expect my ESL to show through once or twice, as well as occasional untraceable misspell. But I did my best and can swear it is at least twice as fresh as it was before.
Lastly, by the end of OVA I discovered manga is fully available raw, though it wasn't of much help (of none at all) - the anime series is based very loosely on manga, omitted many events and characters, while other characters I struggled to even recognize. Hell, TV1 covers 3 out of 4 manga volumes. Yet eventually, I found myself carried away by the manga itself, as a completely independent product, of which I read some random 30 pages with genuine interest by then. Yeah, I can see why it was a bestseller in its time. It's enchantingly bittersweet.
[Latest versions of sub files are stored here](https://github.com/Perevodildo/Perevodildo-softsubs)
DDLs are available [here](https://t.me/+wklXJvslCQE3ZGIy), I will keep it up for a couple of months
UPD: With Diskotek's apparent plans to license the entirety of this franchise, this project is now archived and serves a fallback function at best. There's no questioning it, the Diskotek translation would be times as better, so grab that if you can.
