Our encode of the JPBD with modified MTBB subtitles, sourced from OZR. OZR provided trimmed dub and Scrad replaced the part 1 ED styling. Audio for the OVA was sourced from LostYears.
Video/Audio: Scrad/sam
Subtitles: MTBB (modified)
Source goes from OK to poor as you step through the volumes, with compression artifacts, poor chroma, banding, aliasing, etc. The last volume was especially bad. Changed the font in the Demon language because Arial was pretty ugly, restyled ED1 (sorry Smoke), taking inspiration from whatever Smoke did before. Thanks to Tom and Vodes for demotivating me.

Any comps? Does this retain grain which was the reason the Remux was the best release?
Mabby
Looks mostly fine. Has some problems like wavy / jagged / bumpy lines (if you compare any line art) and haloing / noise artifacts compared to VCB’s encode, but retains micro-detail and grain better, less blocking / banding, and has fixed dirty lines for scenes that have it. Probably decent enough so you don’t have to archive the remux and overall better than VCB. Just a shame it isn’t perfect.
Also no honorifics track which would have been effortless to keep.

Mabby shut up you have no idea what you are talking about
Mabby
Put up or shut up. If you are going to be a smart-ass, prove otherwise. Or you’re just another comment from someone who actually doesn’t know what they are talking about and didn’t notice the issue.
You see this? It’s on all line art everywhere.

Here it is with VCB - non-existent and AA’d away.

If you want to call the aliasing or whatever other terminology it may fall under being a source problem, so be it. Doesn’t make this encode flawless when it could have been corrected a bit. Unless you like bumpy jagged lines I guess.
How about some haloing and noise? Here you go.
https://slow.pics/c/5FHieW8k
There are issues all over if you know where to look. Scrad’s encode is better than VCB overall when factoring in micro-detail retention, debanding, dirty line fixes, and grain. It just could have used some better settings for other flaws. Unless of course the goal is not to improve upon the raw and just make it smaller…

Thank God I don’t watch stuff zoomed x300, but perhaps that’s just me.

@Mabby
There is a reason why I chose to not aa the lines, specifically because those jagged lines you mention seem intentional to me, at least in the grainy sections, which is like 90% of the show. Idk why VCB chose to aa it but I stand by what I said.
Aergia
More like you don’t know what you’re talking about. The line-art is intentionally stylized to be this way. Congratulations on embarassing yourself.
Mabby
Sure buddy. If it was intentional, then it would be relatively consistent existing in every frame / area part of a full key animation or similarly drawn lines in other scenes. However this is not always the case. I’m sure you know it’s intentional just because though and not possibly an issue like the massive haloing existing in certain later volumes. Maybe the haloing is intentional too.
Anyways, while fixable, it’s largely ignorable. Fixing the leftover haloing / noise in the later episodes would probably have a higher visual priority.
@ScRaDoW Thanks for the encode. Still better than the current alternatives.

Waiting for the great Mabby encode 👍
HachiRokuNiSanKyu
Source is still better.

@HachiRokuNiSanKyu Please stop commenting on my release, thanks
you have no idea what you are talking about, nor do you have any explanations to back up your claim about your said claims.
Aergia
The whole point of the effect is to make it inconsistent & rough looking…
And by the way, there is no haloing.
Mabby
New cope? Sure doesn’t explain the jagged lines in non-grainy pre-isekai’d scenes where they don’t use the “rougher look”.
For someone who claims to know how to encode, you must be having a bad day. It’s there, maybe slight in places mixed with compression artifacts, but still present.

Or would you like me to pull some more examples from different frames?

Aergia
Thanks for finally pointing out cases where the issues actually appear, now if only you did that from the start instead of bullshitting everyone with screenshots which didn’t have them…
Mabby
Try using your eyes next time. The problems are in the images I provided above.
Aergia
They aren’t, try learning what is & isn’t an artifact.

Mabby, if we’re going to treat that lineart like aliasing, that means we’re committing ourselves to destroying any kind of hand-drawn look in anime for the rest of time. There’s no way to distinguish that bumpiness from something the studio intentionally preserved from the lineart stage, or even added during post-processing.
I’m actually obsessed with preserving that kind of lineart and will sacrifice better AA in order to do it.

Mabby is the absolute worst kind of anime fan. ugh. Just “archive” the fucking BDraws if you’re that much of a dweeb. Or make your own encodes - which no doubt will lead you to realize there will ALWAYS be “issues” in any encode. It’s a matter of choosing which trade-offs you’re comfortable with to achieve the filesize you want. 99% of the people downloading a release only care about major issues. Pixel-hunters are fucking pathetic nerds. Go complain about all the awful official BD releases, right into a publishers email inbox. That’s a far more useful way to spend your time.

TBH i dont think mabby is the worst kind of anime fan, in fact, I am impressed by him/her having proof of everything he/she said.
Mabby would make a great friend that can give someone a real, direct and honest criticism, without any filter. And all those criticism, if taken positively and non-offensively, can be a great discussion topics.
In fact, mabby’s first comment here is actually needed if anyone is having a hard time picking up which encode they wanna use, but someone just has to tell him/her to shut up, spurring flames on this whole comment section.
From neutral point of view, I agree with what mabby said, but also know the reason why this encode is done this way.
