#### Note :
My goal is to enable better low-sized anime releases, by using the most efficient tools available right now, tweaked to still be plenty fast.

## **→ [More AV1 releases](https://nyaa.si/?f=0&c=0_0&q=AV1)**
#### Disclaimer :
###### AV1 is a relatively new codec. It *may* struggle on older devices in 1080p.
###### AV1 is superior in certain usecases, just like H.265 or VP9 are in others, or like H.264 and even XviD were at some point. I am merely taking advantage of this fact. I won't deny the superiority of other codec for other uses. Current AV1 encoders aren't quite tuned for high fidelity and fine detail retention, however its artefacts at low bitrates (mainly blur and loss of surface details) are much less noticeable than HEVC's, which usually appear in the form of blocking AND very poor motion clarity.
###### Helping the anime community to improve in certain area, where many people think it has been stagnant for years, is another one of my objectives. Accelerating the democratization of AV1 on anime trackers like nyaa can only be beneficial for everyone. That way people can learn what it is, why it matters, how to use it effectively and understand where it struggles and should be avoided, but also recognize its strength.
###### To help decoding, I mainly release 720p content. However my goal is to switch entirely to 1080p low-sized releases in late 2022 at the earliest or 2023, when adoption will have risen and our devices gotten even more powerful. At that point, hardware decoders should be democratized, and software decoding should be even faster than what it is right now, making it possible even for some older devices to play 1080p AV1 near flawlessly.
#### Remarque :
720p version coming in a few days
Juste comme ça, je n'ai pas de problème de lecture malgré que mon ordi ait 12 ans. Le tout est parfaitement fluide.

AMD Radeon 5800 Series
It is mostly explained in my first comment, but many people still can't decode 1080p AV1 properly, so I'm aiming my work at them. Also I find there's a lack of great 720p encodes of almost any anime, so I want to do some decent ones for the shows I like the most. 1080p is indeed better, but great 1080p content isn't lacking in the community. We can indeed improve it further with the help of AV1, but I think I should still focus on 720p ones for now. Not that I won't be releasing more 1080p encodes along my 720p ones like I've been doing quite a lot lately.
Also, completely unrelated, I'm almost halfway through my Gleipnir 720p encode, but I'm not particularily happy about the results so far. So I'm not exactly sure I'll release it in the end. It's also not a priority since it seems like the show is 1080p native from the few tests I've done, even though I might be wrong.
Just curious, what encoder are you using? I have found that SVT-AV1 on newer versions of FFMPEG decode much better than other encoders, specifically with the "fast_decode" parameter. With this option, 1080p60 decoding uses ~30% less CPU.
If you are using FFMPEG, check into what version it is. Older versions have a bugged version of the AV1 encoder, leading to some pretty gnarly visual issues.
I use a software called AV1AN which is the best tool to properly thread the AV1 encoders and have the maximum speed out of them. You can see in the description that I used SVT-AV1 for this one, but I've done most of my encodes as of now with aomenc. I always download the latest version of encoders when they're out. I'm currently using SVT-AV1 v1.1.0, even though this release in particular was done with v1.0.0. I've tinkered a lot with fast-decode actually, but I've never used it yet for an encode I released. It had a non negligible impact on quality and file size and thus in efficiency. v1.1.0 should have improved fast-decode according to the devs but I've not done serious tests yet to compare it to v1.0.0. After all it only released a few days ago.
Check out this webpage which explains how to get better decoding performance out of SVT-AV1 :
https://gitlab.com/AOMediaCodec/SVT-AV1/-/blob/master/Docs/CommonQuestions.md#improving-decoding-performance
I have found that the two best ways of improving decoding perf in v1.0.0 is either to use a higher preset, which can be detrimental to quality in many cases or switch to 8bits, which can even double the perf for some low end devices like my Pentium laptop.
