The tally marks you refer to are only used in select countries in Asia (China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea), whereas the tally marks that were subbed span 4 continents (in most of Europe, Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand and North America.)
I think it’s hard to disagree with their choice here. Accessibility is the goal here, and people who actually know japanese or chinese wouldn’t need the signs translated for them in the first place.

Then what about staying true to the character? And if you’re gonna do this, you might as well change currency too because people might not know the Yen’s worth. I’ve seen others use Dollars instead of Yens in their subs… probably gonna happen here too
