[Chihiro] In the Land of Leadale 03 [1080p Hi10P AAC][60F4FBD4].mkv (479.6 MiB)
What the hell are you doing, Chihiro? The subtitles are TERRIBLE. "Come on, you brought a girl like here here? My apologies, ma'am?". That's wrong on several levels. One, the dude was not talking to the MC, so the subs addressing here are wrong Second, where the hell did you get "apologies"? The word is never uttered or implied. Did you mean to write "Seriously?", because that's what he said. Third, "jou-chan" is not "ma'am", nor will it ever be. It's "little girl". And that's the entire joke: she looks far younger then the person who brought her there. Fourth, "a girl like her"? What language is that? Cause it's not proper English. Who the hell talks like that? Did you resurrect Eclipse to write the dialogue for you? How did you even get that line wrong? It's correct in the CR subtitles. And that was just for one line. The script is full of this. What happened?
@DmonHiro CR has "missy" which is not natural English. If you call a young girl "missy" you're talking to her in a stern voice. It has to be adjusted to be natural, which is where the ma'am comes from. "A girl like her" is natural English (15.5m google search results, heard every day in my career).
The goal isn't to be literal, but to be natural.
I was wondering if you'd latch on to the simple stuff, and not mention the translation that is outright wrong. Well done. It's good to know Chihiro is the same clown show it's always been.
I don't know an iota of Japanese but I recently watched that shitshow called Goblin Slayer, and I was impressed by how shitty Chihiro's version was. I also downloaded smugcat's subs and holy fuck they were way better than Chihiro. No offense, but the difference was insane.
Since then I am a bit more cautious about their releases. Unfortunately, it seems like the problems remain.
Since most people who download stuff don't know Japanese I feel it's my duty to inform them when they are downloading poor subs, since they don't have a way of knowing. What they do with that information is their choice, but they should be informed.
anyone that's still watching isekai in current year deserves shit subs. i fell like even pointing that out has become stale, yet somehow people just won't stop watching.
The word "missy" is diminutive for "miss." It can be used angrily (Now look here, little missy! You'd better behave!), just as well as it can be used affectionately (aren't you the cutest little missy in that dress!), or neutrally if addressing a young girl whose name you don't know (Can I help you, missy? You look lost). It will frequently be preceded by a redundant "little," just because we do that.
The phrase "a girl like her," is perfectly fine. Not sure what makes it improper English in your view, Dmon. It's the title of at least two 21st century films.
For a native English speaker, there's nothing wrong with either the word or the phrase. I'm not addressing the quality of the subtitles (have downloaded but not watched this episode yet), just weighing in on a couple grammatical points of argument here in the comments. I liked Chihiro's work on the first two episodes well enough, though, and am happy to see them producing this season.
It's amazing how everyone commenting are saying nothing about the translation being wrong, and only focus on the grammar. I always heard about this phenomenon but wanted to see if it was true. Turns out, it is. People will ignore something that is blatantly wrong for which they have to argument for, in favor of arguing something much easier to tackle. The line "My apologies, ma’am" is completely wrong, yet all anyone seems to be talking about are the relatively subjective points. Also, Chihiro, "ma'am" is not the translation for "jou-chan". "嬢ちゃん" can be "young lady", "miss". It's literally made of the kanji for "miss" (arguably unmarried miss" and the sufix -chan. And again, the joke is that she looks YOUNG, not old.
https://ufile.io/az6wzxns Here is a patch to change the trivial line DmonHiro was complaining about, along with similar instances in the other episodes.
You catch flies even easier with actual shit. What's your point? You could have just taken the L, said "Oh, oops, messed up some lines, here's a v2", but nope, gotta try and save face with the "nihongo" and "trivial" BS, I guess.
I have said my piece, made changes even when I disagree with you, have been nothing but courteous and professional, and yet you still continue to troll. I will kindly remind you to review the site rules. Have a nice day.
"Shitposting and Trolling: Your account will be banned if you keep this up. Repeatedly making inaccurate/false reports falls under this rule as well.
I have read them. I don't know what you're talking about though. What I said does not fall in either category since I didn't say anything false.
Just thought of something... is there not an official manga translation yet? Or at least an agreed upon translation from any scanlators? I figure that'd settle this. Also you can all just download aegisub and change certain words to whatever you want.
I'd assume that any typo will be fixed in the batch so it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I concur on the usage of "a girl like her", though I would personally translate "嬢ちゃん" to something like "little miss" to at least imply some nuance.
On another note, it's nice to see Chihiro still active today.
