Notes:
[\*] Source is excellent, only some minor halos and a few h.264'd scenes. These have been fixed
[\*] Opening: Halos, ringing, aliasing, banding, all masked, spliced into the script via an intermediate
[\*] Dirty lines fixed in all episodes with rektlvls/fillborders/bbmod/ContinuityFixer
[\*] Slight DNR on mid-high luma values with SMDegrain (masked (twice, adg.Mask + edge mask))
[\*] 'Cards' within eps were filtered heavily
[\*] E18 & E25 have a single scene from a low quality medium (master lost?), replaced with DVD (heavily filtered and rotated (6.5°))
[\*] I've changed the styling for the OP, Dekinai Subs have a 1px outline which renders as aliasing
[\*] Also -2200ms on two lines during the final scene of E25
[\*] English Dub is a bit quiet at times, not my fault, just how it has been mastered. Turn your speakers up.
[\*] *I deserve to be lashed for not encoding this at 4:4:4*
[\*] Scripts hosted [here](https://git.concertos.live/OpusGang/EncodeScripts/src/branch/master/Berserk.1997/S01)
When you remember that "Berserk's" actual title is huge... _剣風伝奇ベルセルク/ Berserk: The Chronicles of Wind Blades, Sword-Wind Chronicle Berserk_ Thank you.
It doesn't seem this compares too well against DEXA's release. There's a quite noticeable sharpness loss from the 720p downscale.https://slow.pics/c/kJZ8ndPz
Dekinai's subs which I also think are probably the best subs for Berserk do include a few spelling errors which I caught during my last rewatch, they're not too bad though to detract too much from the quality of the subs. here are some examples https://slow.pics/c/piZCKNK8
This release is also AVC(x264) 8bit so will be HW decode compatible with virtually any device you'd reasonably try to play it on, and with the srt sub track should have near-universal playback support which is a plus over DEXA's release which uses AVC 10bit which has nearly no HW decode support.
@sorrow Try using a proper scaler next time https://slow.pics/c/ijwzAZsF
From the encoder:
> The (relative) softness is intentional, I've used a stronger deblock and softer resampler than the status quo to avoid ringing in the output. I spent a long time thinking about what was best to use.
@mux majority of people aren't going to be watching using HQ scalers like FSRCNNX, NGU, NNEDI3, or RAVU, majority of players will default to Mitchell, Bilinear, or some other conventional scaler.
Isn't Mitchell considered THE proper scaler for comparisons most of the time anyway as it's what a survey of experts deemed the most neutral, of Bicubic at least? https://legacy.imagemagick.org/Usage/filter/#mitchell
@sorrow 720p would always be "too soft" if we were comparing all 720p releases against 1080p with a soft scaler like bilinear.
"The majority of people" can't tell the difference between a painstakingly scenefiltered encode and a bitstarved USBD re-encode, what's your point?
