Piyo-Piyo Productions presents: Ride the Wind 6/24/20 https://www.otakubell.com/ https://anidb.net/anime/3523 Project Pipeline: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Kn1CpiTGbjW3zO6TfLTw21ZayYqdHbJoWUsNw2ETh8A/edit?usp=sharing Source: Laserdisc Everything PPP-Raw releases is from laserdisc source. At the time of ripping, no DVD, Bluray, or official digital souce is known to exist (or is of poor quality). Domesday Edition: This was captured using a Domesday Duplicator. You can read all about the Domeday Duplicator project at https://www.domesday86.com/?page_id=978. Project notes: Here’s a topic you rarely seen in anime: Motorcross, which is offroad dirt bike racing. Looks like a good one, and a rather interesting disc overall. In additon to the OVA itself, there are ads at the end for a few IRL motorcross videos, as well as a Japanese Castrol Oil commercial, and a handful of anime previews. This also has one of my favorite things in anime in general: Japanese people who don’t speak Englsh trying to speak in English. Even more interesting, this has a black character voiced by an actual native English speaker (probably), who, fortunately, does not attempt to speak Japanese. The translation of the title seems to be a real issue. I had seen three different translations, so while working on this I asked a contact in Japan what he thought the correct translation was, and he proceeded to give me a FOURTH translation. So to hell with it, I went with the one that sounded best to me. There is a problem with the beginning of the disc. The first 90 seconds of digital audio are completely missing, so I have made the analog audio track the default instead of the digital track. There are also some chroma disturbances in the first 90 seconds. Things seem to settle down after that. This project was a long time coming: First, the disc was missing in my huge collection for the past several years. Until recently, my collection, while fully cataloged, was mostly unorganized. I’ve been working on while stuck at home, so all “missing” discs in my collection have now been lcoated. Once captured, this disc became the subject of three different bugs in ld-decode, and I had to rebuild the software once they could be worked around. Unfiltered high bitrate DVD conversion included for archival purposes.

The Domeday Duplicator is so cool.

@DmonHiro You aren't kidding, brotha! Unfortunately its very existence means I have to go back and capture literally everything there is to capture, at least until such time as more people can get their own DDDs.
Thank you for oldschool. Where can I find such a duplicator or do I need to do it myself?

@pukidesu I had a friend help me. He got a kit that was available on the Domesday86 Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2070493199906024/) At the time, the one I got was the last one, but that was quite a while back, maybe there are more now? Its all Open Hardware, so you might be able to have somebody fab it for you... not sure how that works. See https://www.domesday86.com/?page_id=1070 for info on how to make one. Oh, and you can also 3D print a case now: https://github.com/simoninns/DomesdayDuplicator-Case
@toynbeeidea thank you for info.
@DmonHiro. It's a terrific gadget, and it arrived just in time - some laserdiscs are showing increasing signs of bit rot (notably, Pony Canyon LDs). By pushing all of the video and audio processing into software, sophisticated algorithms can be employed to deal with defects. Of course, that means frequent updates to the software - and new decoding runs - as novel defects are found and worked around. It would be nice to have a similar system for VHS tapes - capturing the direct output of the read head and then post-processing everything in software. At the moment, the best that can be done is to do an uncompressed capture of the video stream. That allows software to have a fighting chance of dealing with the numerous VHS artifacts, without fighting the problems introduced by video compression during capture.
