Source: Laserdisc
Everything PPP-Raw releases is from laserdisc source. At the time of ripping, no DVD or Bluray source is known to exist.
Okay, Amon Saga is a bit of an exception to that, see below.
Domesday Edition:
This was captured using a Domesday Duplicator. You can read all about the Domeday Duplicator project at https://www.domesday86.com/?page_id=978.
Project notes:
Let’s get this elephant out of the way: Yes, Amon Saga was officially released on DVD in North America by Manga Video, who may or may not still have the rights. They did an absolutely shit job of it. They just took the VHS master, (badly) upscaled it, and dumped it onto a DVD. “Buy it up, you stupid weebs!” Well, a fan of Amon Saga acquired the original LD for me to capture to see if I couldn’t do a better job of it. I dunno, you tell me. I did contact Mangle Video well before I ever took the disc out, but was ignored, so yo-ho-ho it is.
For the record, I will cooperate with any anime rightsholders anywhere in the world. You ask me to capture something for you, and I totally will. Throw me a copy of the final release and maybe a few bucks, and we’re good. I’m currently working with a US rightsholder on a fairly famous work whose original masters have been lost, and they’re going to use Domesday captures for a Bluray restoration. Ignoring me is just dumb.
Due to the technical problems I experienced on the Moomin project I decoded this with an almost-finished pre-release of ld-decode v6, which is MUCH faster and has better audio support. I can’t test the digital audio on this disc, because it lacks a digital track. The analoge audio certainly sounds better than v5.x – but is it “right?” I don’t know. Its still louder than the conventional cap. Then again, maybe its supposed to be. I mean, I could complain that the conventional cap is a little fuzzier, and since that’s what its always looked like the Domesday version is wrong: Its one of the excuses for the LP hipster industry. I dunno, I guess you all tell me?
So for now I’m still including a DVD conversion of a conventional cap in case you want the audio from that, as well as the DVD conversion of the raw Domesday decode.
