EDIT: there will not be a 1080p release because the show's native res is 720p and the Netflix 1080p is just a shitty oversharp (b=0 c=1) upscale. Fullscreen this in your player and it will look much better than any unfiltered (or even filtered if the encoder's worse than me, K3) 1080p release and probably have half the filesize. We know what we're doing.
EDIT2: There's a high chance this release won't work with VLC because latest versions of VLC broken 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. MPV's what was QCed against and no support will be given for any other player.

@fuee b=0 c=1 looks absolutely terrible to any competent encoder. Please don't encode this at 1080p at least without taking care of the aliasing-like artifacts b=0 c=1 introduces, but even then, it'll just be bloat. Fullscreen this in your player and it'll look much better than the 1080p Netflix direct rip.
Hi there! I've downloaded this a couple of times, and whenever I try to play it, all I get is some flickering like VLC trying to resize itself over and over. I can hear the audio, but the video is just the black screen with the VLC logo and the flickering. I don't have any other problems with any other anime, so I am just wondering if anyone has a tip on what might be happening and how I might resolve it. And yes, I am using the latest release of VLC.
Thanks for all the actually helpful comments! I was able to get mpv set up. It's a bit less user-friendly than VLC, but the file actually plays. I will still prolly use VLC for most things, but now that I have a good option for when it can't I should be covered. Thank you!

Just use SMPlayer https://www.smplayer.info/, customise it however you like it to look in your Options -> Preferences -> Interface, and then update MPV inside the file directory with Shinchiro's https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpv-player-windows/files/. You just replace the MPV that SMPlayer came with, with Shinchiro's, and then run updater.bat every so often as admin. You're good to go after that point, if you don't want to bother with filtering or scripting or anything. Don't use VLC, it's shit.
Well, in my opinion mpv is garbage, it doesn't even have a gui or a installer...
You can watch this with VLC, just go to Tools -> Preferences -> Video -> Output, and change it to "OpenGL video output for Windows".
>It has a better and faster subtitle renderer too
Nah, not really. I never had any issues with XY. And I have like 40-50% GPU usage with madVR. Couldn't go past 30% with MPV.
I did have issues with MPV tho. That shit has some weird issues with blur. I added some commands but still nothing. And audio playback is just so bad compared to MPC.
Srsly, fuck this nerdy bullshit.
Try playing our Houseki no Kuni OP kfx with mpc-hc. xyvs and xysub stalls out. Same with some ts GJM does iirc. If you haven't had xyvs or xysub die on you, you haven't played autistic enough ts or kfx.
EDIT: Ryzen 2700x with 32GB DDR4 RAM here btw
>Same with some ts GJM does iirc.
Boogiepop worked just fine with my GTX.
Their typesetting tends to suck hard tho.
![alt text](https://i.imgur.com/Hbwa828.png)
Oh man. I’d almost prefer an an8 here.
>with my GTX
With such a non-specific (and mostly meaningless outside of it being nVidia) answer I can only assume you mean one of these
![no retardation allowed in my treehouse, girls get out reee](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51hPl%2BvvpVL._SX425_.jpg)
Boogiepop is a joint with DDY and is for better or worse perhaps not a good reflection of GJM-only shows. Try GJM's Kaguya or Bocchi instead. In fact we were having an issue just recently while working on Senryu Girl where a sign would slow xy down (combination of gradients, movement and fades) while libass would play it without any issues.
GJM TS is probably some of the best you'll find because our TSers push boundaries.
Boogiepop hasn't been worked on by a GJM typesetter for the majority of the series, so I would not use that as a reference point for our work.
DDY's work on it is for the most part very good, but it's not done by one of ours. Picking out one sign in over 100 and making a blanket statement, because you didn't like its implementation, is pretty unfair to begna and his work, Kamiyan.
Except it has nothing to do with said "implementation".
Modern typesetting tends to be unreadable af. And the same same goes for original JP signs (lol).
PS:

Calling it bait doesn't give you a pass for insulting his work. Contrary to popular internet belief, you can't say dumb shit and put a Kappa after it to make it okay.
\>And it has garbage scaler.
You mean the advantage of being open-source and people can create their own scalers for it?
Btw, some of them are better than the ones included in madVR.
\>madVR is just better. Especially with 4k monitor.
I have a 4k monitor and it isn't. Old libass versions had problems, newer versions work fine.
\>It’s not about needing help but about convenience and time wasted.
It's literally just copying two .conf files for a decent setup.
They are using literally instagram in the show even though it takes place so far into the future that Mars has been terraformed and colonized. I think the production design in general is questionable.
I had no problems with this episode on MPC-HC with XY without madVR.
But in general, telling people to just blindly copy shit is a poor solution. You should want an easily accessible manual, which also means offline access.
Wait wait wait wait wait wait.
You guys have this on Netflix ? Gunjou no Magmel too ????
I don't have this in Canada :(
Man ... That's why i can't find Gunjou on nyaa ??
Feel isolated ...
@XRA9
Well, there is one. But then it's "too much text" for some people.
Compared to MPC-HC with madVR there isn't that much of a difference, because figuring out a decent setup also takes time.
The only real difference is not having a GUI. But I prefer just writing what I want instead of clicking and spending too much time figuring out where the option is.
MPC-HC with XY usually works, but I would recommend AssFilterMod with MPC-HC (iirc it's libass based).
That should be comparable with plain mpv.
mpv has the advantage of being available on almost all plattforms. Also a reason why subgroups nowadays just check their releases with mpv or another video player that has libass.
@eXmendiC, unless I'm misunderstanding, looks like that's only for iOS/AppleTV. I'm probably still using Plex's Exoplayer or whatever. Either way, I don't notice any issues with playback or subtitle rendering (except interestingly enough audio had problems with a couple Precure series that I was watching but I was able to fix those issues).
Why did you re-encode the already good 720p Raw from Netflix? You're just reducing quality at this point.
Please don't do that in the future. It's unwanted.
@ergzay We didn't. We re-encoded the 1080p and filtered it. We basically just made a better 720p from it. The 720p is trash but the 1080p is too, just much less so from what I've seen. My encode has some things it did better and Netflix's 1080p source (that we used to encode from) had some things it did better.
If you want to use MPC-HC you can also use the XySubFilter binary in this pull request here:
https://github.com/Cyberbeing/xy-VSFilter/pull/16
Which uses libass to render instead of vsfilter. Pretty sure it was built with the latest libass commits.
XY is outdated for MPC now that assfiltermod exists. MPV is a good player but it does have limitations compared to madvr. That said, you need a really good GPU to make madvr worth using over MPV.

oversharp bicubic :thonk:?
> Wait, fansub nowadays use mpv? I thought they use mpc with cccp codec pack?
it's fine but your sub is gonnabe rekt so hard, especially with many modern typesettings
unless you just want to watch the motion picture only
>Contrary to popular internet belief, you can’t say dumb shit and put a Kappa after it to make it okay.
I just did tho? begna stinx
>it’s fine but your sub is gonnabe rekt so hard, especially with many modern typesettings

Not quite. You'll have some srs quality issues.
TBH, even modern encodes look meh w/o GPU support.
And DVD is absolutely unwatchable w/o madVR.
>Btw, some of them are better than the ones included in madVR.
Welp, it apparently got decent scaler recently but it sucked for a long time.
Audio playback still sucks tho.
Anyway, only nerds use that shit.
Thanks to the fact that this had 100 comments, I downloaded mpv and learned how to use it a little bit. Took some messing about (and I'm still in the dark about a lot of it, really), but I got a lot of subs I used to have trouble with on MPC working with this. Thank you for subbing the episode by the way! Very fun anime.
If I could make a request for future episodes, can you also sub the English vocals done during the songs? It would be nice to have songs subbed, even if they're in English.
@Koizumi our current stance is only transcribing the lyrics when they're hardsubbed in JP because that means the studio thought the lyrics were important enough to 100% know what they're saying. Our hearing's just as good as any other native English speaker and it'd just be another thing to fix for batch if we get the transcription wrong when official lyrics come out or it'll be a hot topic for debate if someone else hears something we didn't (and we wouldn't be fixing it until batch anyway). We're internally debating whether or not to transcribe them all for batch once official lyrics are out, though.
That makes sense, and is understandable. I tend to use English subtitles even for movies/shows in English since auditory processing disorder makes it challenging to understand what anyone says if I'm not familiar with them (doesn't help that the vocals in the ending are mixed oddly and made it even tougher than usual to pick up on, lmfao; at least the opening is better about that).
Thank you for explaining regardless! I'll at least be hoping you guys do it for the batch.
"You wanna go?!"
This delved pretty deeply into creative writing territory. He very clearly did not say that or anything remotely similar to it. I'll always prefer the subs to be what the characters are are actually saying. You're clearly not writing the show for me, but my guess is that most people who would notice this and care about it would prefer accuracy over creative writing as well.
> I’ll always prefer the subs to be what the characters are are actually saying.
I suggest you learn Japanese and read Japanese subtitles then, because what they're actually saying is Japanese. Based on what you've written here, that appears to be the only way to satisfy your own standards.
Translation isn't a process where you one-to-one map words-to-words. This is actually impossible because there exists no two languages where each word is used in the same way, every word has an exact equivalent, every grammatical construct conveys the same level of information as the other, and every phrase or combination of words means the same thing as the literal combination of equivalent words in the other language.
What translators actually have to do is map the feelings and emotions and intents and contextual elements conveyed through words in one language (and other cues from the work in question), to words in another language that convey the same feelings and emotions and intents and contextual elements. This is an inherently creative process because any two languages (particularly English and Japanese) are different to each other, so modifications are often required be made.
It's funny that you chose this specific line to take problem with. It's hardly the only line we had to be creative with. The reason you pointed out this line must be because it's the only line that *babby's first Japanese* understood.
You're wasting your breath, kumo. People like that are just gonna call you a burgersubber or some other meaningless term that actually means "good translator".
GJM, you're the biggest ball of cancer in fansubbing. I'm not surprised that you're defending creative writing in subs and attacking people who honestly want to watch the show that was originally written, since creative writing's your bread and butter. The fact that you're an utterly repulsive human being doesn't exactly help matters. Hell, you wear your awfulness as a badge of honor. It's a shame 4chan-style cancer took a foothold in the anime community ages ago and keeps producing abominations like you.
To kumo, your subs were mostly fine. You're not GJM. Please don't dive deep, deep into the sewer and become any more similar to them. You're hopefully better than that. Judging from your response you're likely the same sort of filth (hur dur, I know nothing about you except that you disliked one line I completely rewrote that made the person incorrectly sound like a violent asshole, but I'm going to accuse you of literally only knowing this one phrase because thinking people have depth is hard and I'm an arrogant, condescending, pretentious asshole), but maybe you're not stuck in quite as deep. Maybe your response was a fluke and you aren't quite as shitty as you appear.
To the various people who attacked me purely because I prefer subs to be what the show's creators wrote instead of what some fansubber thought would be better, I think I can help. If you honestly prefer fanfic to the show's actual writing, there are plenty of sites dedicated to exactly that sort of creative writing. You should check them out. I think you'll be happy.
>You’re not GJM
I wonder if people like you realise these groups have tons of overlapping staff who regularly communicate and work together on different things. Reading stuff like this is hilarious.
Almost all of the staff involved in this show at PAS work at or have worked for GJM. I hope you're enjoying some GJM subbing, jelliPop.
If it weren't for us and our recruitment and training efforts, fansubbing would be dead. You're welcome.
Somehow this got top 5 in most public torrent comment. Nice
Edit: I mostly use my phone to watch anime anyway (using mx player ofc) so the vlc bs doesn't matter
"won’t work with VLC because latest versions of VLC broken 4:4:4 chroma subsampling"
This is a bug in the renderer not the whole of VLC.
Go to Settings - Video and change the output to OpenGL or one of the others that works, I would use OpenGL for Windows as it's accelerated and the other 'OpenGL' makes your cursor vanish under the image, or DirectX 9.
Direct3D11 - broken, black + flicker
Direct3D9 video output - fine
DirectX (DirectDraw) video output - broken, pink screen
Windows GDI video output- fine
OpenGL video output for Windows - fine
OpenGL video output - fine
