Project notes:
The head of Orphan was really jonesing for this LD! He loves The Legacy of Al Caral. But the exsiting rip they subtitled with? Not so hot. The colors were washed out, a lot of the fine background details were blurred out of existence, As to the show’s contents, you can read their description at http://collectr.blogspot.com/2017/10/al-caral-no-isan.html.
The good news here is that the disc itself was very well-made. Some of the scenes have incosistent framing, most noticable in the first ten minutes, I don’t know what that’s all about. A few scenes had minor jitter that I didn’t feel worth compensating for (as doing so can cause other issues). The picture quality was great, though, and the cuts are nice and clean.
I compressed this at 1500kbps x264 instead of my usual 1000kbps, per Orphan’s request. I think its a waste of space, but Orphan paid for and supplied the disc, so here we are.
Some of those fine background details were a bit problematic... you can certainly find flaws in them if you look for them. My filters couldn’t always detect what was going on back there, so, for example, you may find some aliasing, if you look for it – but you kinda do have to look for it. If you think you can do better, the unfiltered high bitrate DVD conversion is included for archival purposes.
